Magic Scrapbook Layout

Creating a Spooky Scrapbook Page with a Grid Sketch and Prima Twilight

When I sat down to create a scrapbook page, I knew exactly what I wanted to do,  I was using a grid layout sketch, which gave me a great foundation to build on. From the very beginning, I knew this was going to be a Halloween-themed layout, and the gorgeous Prima Twilight collection was the perfect match for the job.

Step 1: Starting with the Sketch and Paper Selection

The Prima Twilight collection has such a rich, moody vibe, with oranges and blacks that scream Halloween and a soft pink twist—perfect for this layout! I chose a stripy paper for the background to add some bold patterning. To balance the stripes and give the layout a grounded feel, I added black paper along the edges of the background paper. This really helped to frame the design and make everything pop.

The grid layout sketch gave me a structured yet flexible approach. I started by cutting bits of paper to layer up in the grid blocks and deciding on placement on the background.

Step 2: Building Clusters and Adding Embellishments

Once the grid was in place, I moved on to creating my clusters. I love adding little clusters of embellishments to bring life to the page. With the Prima Twilight collection, I had so many fun pieces to choose from—spooky icons like bats, pumpkins, and witches hats.

I also added in some bits from Bo Bunny Charmed Chronicles and puffy stickers from Maggie Holmes Woodland Grove. I picked a few key pieces and layered them within the grid blocks. The trick is to not overdo it; I wanted the clusters to feel balanced and cohesive, with just enough embellishment to make them stand out.

Step 3: Stitching and Adding Texture

To add some texture and a bit of dimension to the page, I grabbed my sewing machine and stitched the edges of the grid blocks and the clusters. I left the threads hanging, which gives the layout a more casual, whimsical look—almost as if the page is has spiderwebs dangling. The stitching also added an extra layer of depth, which helped the embellishments pop off the page.

Step 4: The Finishing Touch – A Title Piece

No scrapbook page is complete without a title! For this layout, I wanted something that would tie in perfectly with the spooky theme so I chose a puffy sticker from Maggie Holmes Woodland Grove which was perfection!  To add dimension to the title and ensure it stood out, I popped the title on a die cut and to make it even more special, I added a wee sparkly spider to the cluster for that extra touch of Halloween magic.

Final Thoughts

Using a grid layout sketch as a starting point made this Halloween-themed layout come together so easily. It gave me a solid structure, but I was still able to let my creativity shine with the Prima Twilight collection and the fun  embellishments. The sewing, layers, and title all came together to create a layout that I absolutely love.

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend giving a grid sketch a try for your next project. It’s a great way to create a cohesive design while leaving plenty of room for creativity. Happy scrapping!
